Soloist First Post
Dear Clients and Friends,
As we enter the height of summer, the virus is continuing to wreak havoc with our economy, our sense or order and security, and for some our faith in the future. Covid-19 is certainly illuminating the fragility of life. Even those of us who procrastinate the most have been moved by our intensified sense of our own mortality to make sure our legal documents are all buttoned up – wills, trusts, durable power of attorney, health care proxy and advanced health care directive. If you haven’t done so, if not now, when?!
But this is only the technical part of estate planning – there is an often-overlooked, profoundly personal side of it that addresses questions such as:
- What do I want to be remembered for?
- Have I made an effort to share my values and beliefs, my legacy, with those important to me?
- Have I told people important to me how much they mean to me, how much I love them?
- Have I left advice behind, for example, for living safely, with integrity, with charity?
- Are there organizations and causes I would like to leave a message and a legacy gift to?
Answers to these and many other things can be memorialized in a document (or video or voice recording) known as an Ethical Will (or a Legacy Letter). They are meant to help us “live on” in important ways with the people, organizations, and communities that have given meaning to our lives. (Of special interest to me are the Jewish ethical wills from the Middle Ages that provide some guidance and inspiration.) Here’s a link to a poignant introduction to the subject:
